Making a silverside beef slow cooker recipe allows a lean cut of beef to become soft and tenderized using a long, slow cooking method. Also called a bottom round roast, silverside meat is obtained from the hindquarters of the cow.

What is Silverside Meat?

A silverside beef slow cooker recipe is made using the silverside cut of meat, which is often called the bottom round. According to The Ohio State University's College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, bottom round roasts, such as the crockpot silverside recipe, are leaner cuts of meat with little to no fat or marbling.

Silverside meat is cut from the hindquarters of the cow, and is an area where the animal uses its muscles for walking. As a result, this cut has a lot more connective tissue in the meat, making slow cooking using a silverside roast slow cooker recipe an excellent choice.

A longer cooking time allow for leaner cuts of meat to tenderize more, explains the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service. According to the University of Minnesota Extension, slow cookers can heat food between 170 to 280 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the setting chosen, for a period of several hours.

Crockpot Silverside Meat Nutrition

According to the USDA, a 4 ounce cut of silverside beef has 170 calories, 24 grams of protein and 7.45 grams of fat. It is, however, not a good source of dietary fiber or carbohydrates, as a 4 ounce serving offers no carbohydrates or fiber, a nutrient required for regular bowel movements and maintaining the body's blood sugar levels.

Silverside roast slow cooker recipes also contain minerals, like iron, sodium and magnesium, that help with body functions like muscle contraction and nerve impulses, as well as boosting immunity. A 4-ounce cut of crockpot silverside meat is also high in potassium and zinc, offering 387.2 milligrams, or 8 percent of the daily value of potassium, and 4.8 milligrams, or 44 percent, of the daily value of zinc.

According to the Linus Pauling Institute's Micronutrient Information Center, diets rich in potassium can help lower blood pressure and prevent the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. Zinc is a micronutrient required by more than 300 enzymes during chemical reactions in the body; it is also necessary for the immune system to function without issue.

Silverside meat is also a good source of Vitamin B12, an important vitamin obtained primarily from animal products. Vitamin B12 helps the body remain energized, and promotes the proper functioning of the nervous system.

Silverside Roast Slow Cooker Ingredients

  • Pot Roast Silverside Beef Joint: Using a leaner cut of beef with little to no fat, like the silverside, you will not need to roast it all day. Using a low setting for no more than 3 hours, will result in a tender crockpot silverside dish.
  • Spices: Season with salt and pepper, both before and after you put the crockpot silverside meat on low. Additional spices that go well in the silverside roast slow cooker recipe include thyme, sage and bay leaves. Choose between water, beef broth and wine to cover the roast and allow it to tenderize.
  • Vegetables: Onions, carrots and potatoes make an excellent addition to the blade roast. Add in the vegetables first, as they take longer to cook in the slow cooker.

  1. Pick the right cut of meat: According to the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, silverside meat obtained from the hindquarters of the cow are less tender, due to the connective tissues present. Cooking the crockpot silverside on low heat, in liquid, for several hours, will help soften the roast.
  2. Sear your silverside cut: Pat the bottom round roast dry before seasoning with salt and pepper. Turn the slow cooker setting to sauté, and heat some olive oil. Sear both sides of the meat — 4 minutes per side. Remove from the slow cooker.
  3. Add cubed vegetables: Add cubed onions, carrots and potatoes to the slow cooker. Mix the water, wine, or beef broth, and gently stir to deglaze the bottom of the silverside roast slow cooker pan.
  4. Braise the silverside roast: Add the seared silverside cut of meat back into the slow cooker. Cover, turn the slow cooker heat setting to low, and let the roast cook for several hours.
